Quick and Easy Buying Guide

Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.

Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).

Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.

Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

$14780 Gets You This 1.52 Carat F Color VS2 Clarity Ideal Cut Round Cut Diamond

An F color diamond such as this diamond is guaranteed to appear pure white, that is except if you hold it up against a diamond of D color and if you did you probably wouldn't be able to tell anyway.

Throwing $14780 on a stone nets one a diamond well above the cut, like this one. A tip: sanity check that you're happy spending the money. VS is an abbreviation for Very Slightly Included - this VS2 clarity diamond has some minor inclusions which might or might not be visible at 10x magnification, but are rarely visible with the naked eye - although it can occur sometimes. F color diamonds are virtually colorless - they are part of the pure white diamond range.

Through lowering the carat size of this stone (1.52 carats), it's possible you might save a few dollars that will help out with other costs. Girdle thickness (for this diamond the girdle is "Medium to slightly thick") can play an important role in the size presented by the diamond, as is explained in my article about girdle thickness.

While not quite as perfect a cut as Hearts & Arrows, the Ideal cut of this particular diamond means it is significantly cheaper, because you're not paying a premium for a "perfectly" cut diamond.

Let us not be too particular; it is better to have old secondhand diamonds than none at all. Mark Twain .
