Quick and Easy Buying Guide

Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.

Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).

Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.

Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

Typically VS1 clarity diamonds are the best value "safe" clarity grading for purchasing online without seeing the diamond - although a lower clarity grading is possible you need to see a high quality photo showing the diamond to assess the inclusions for yourself. The chance in color between any adjacent colors in the D-E-F range is only detectable in a lab, with the significance that this F color diamond is not distinguishable from diamonds rated one color either side of it. This diamond's Ideal cut rating means it has excellent proportions and very good or better symmetry and polish ratings.

Consider whether you're entirely set on the 0.21 carat weight that this diamond is - or whether you can extend a bit more to buy a bigger rock. This diamond's pricetag of $420 means it is firmly a member of the least expensive group of stones that might be used in an engagement ring setting. Pay attention to this diamond's girdle characteristic - "Thin, faceted" - and if you don't know about girdle thickness, go have a read of my short explanation of girdle thicknesses.
