Quick and Easy Buying Guide
Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.
Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).
Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.
Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.
Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).
0.51 Carat H Color SI1 Clarity Premium Cut Round Cut Diamond
A tiny percentage of buyers will care what this H color SI1 diamond looks like in terms of clarity under a 10x scope; most people should just concern themselves with what it looks like to the naked human eye.

The H color of this diamond provides value for your dollar, since it isn't a member of the expensive premium color grades D-F. Through reducing the carat size of this stone (0.51 carats), you may be able to save a substantial amount of money which can help out with other expenses. SI is short for for Slightly Included, which means this SI1 stone contains inclusions that are definitely visible at 10 x magnification and may often be visible to the naked eye, but which provide the opportunity for significant price discounts if they are not. The Premium cut rating for this diamond is a good balance between cut quality and diamond cost.
For any diamond, a price of $1000 puts it in the lowest price group of diamonds, even more so for engagement rings. This diamond has a girdle described as "Slightly thick to thick", which plays a impact on the shine and apparently width of the diamond, as explained in my diamond girdle article.
