Quick and Easy Buying Guide

Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.

Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).

Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.

Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

There's going to be a little price hike to have the VS1 clarity rating of this diamond instead of getting a VS2 diamond, on top of the cost that comes from getting a diamond in the colorless range.

To the naked eye, this F color diamond standing alone appears pure white - there isn't a way to detect any color in it using just the human eye and no other nearby diamonds, or to identify the differences between it and others within the colorless range. For $21690, if you've done your shopping properly you should have a nice stone; ensure that you are plenty critical when you're looking at this diamond. Through lowering the carat size of this stone (1.57 carats), you may be able to save a few dollars which can help out with other costs.

Take note of this diamond's girdle characteristic - "Thin to slightly thick, faceted" - and if you don't know about girdle thickness, go have a read of my short explanation of girdle thicknesses.

Many different companies will provide an Ideal cut rating of diamond, and these diamonds are usually (as is the situation here) perfect with respect to proportions and the overall shape.
