Quick and Easy Buying Guide

Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.

Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).

Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.

Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

1.58 Carat F Color VS1 Clarity Ideal Cut Round Cut Diamond

This VS1 clarity diamond is a slight improvement over a VS2 clarity diamond, the step up in clarity grading comes from there being fewer or smaller inclusions, or when the inclusion is positioned such that it is more favourable to the presentation of the diamond (for example if it is hidden from sight).

Throwing $20210 on a stone nets you a well above average diamond, like this one. Just be sure that you and your partner are happy spending the money. Although not quite as perfect a cut as Hearts & Arrows, the Ideal cut of this particular diamond means it is significantly cheaper, because you're not forking out money for a "perfectly" cut diamond. To the unassisted human eye, this F color diamond by itself appears pure white - there isn't a way to detect traces of color in it utilizing only the naked eye and no other nearby diamonds, or to identify the differences between it and others within the colorless range. Think about whether you are really set on the 1.58 carat weight of this diamond - perhaps you are able to extend a bit more to buy a bigger stone. VS means Very Slightly Included - this VS1 clarity diamond contains some smaller inclusions which might or might not be easy to see under 10x magnification, but almost never visible using just the naked eye - although it can happen sometimes.
