Quick and Easy Buying Guide

Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.

Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).

Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.

Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

Despite the fact this VS2 clarity diamond is pretty much guaranteed to be "eye-clean", if you're looking to save some money, you should check out SI clarity diamonds. Try to find a diamond that is eye-clean in a photo or when viewed in person. The visual attractiveness of this diamond will be quite good because of its Premium cut, although inferior to the more expensive higher cut grades. Weighing up the $33400 cost for this diamond, make sure you consider whether any of the property qualities are excessive for your needs. Girdle thickness (for this diamond the girdle is "Medium to slightly thick, faceted") can play an significant role in the apparent size of the diamond, as is explained in my girdle thickness article.

To the naked eye, this F color diamond by itself appears completely white and pure - there isn't a way to detect any color in the diamond using just the naked eye and no other nearby diamonds, or to identify the differences between it and others within the colorless range. Place this 2.02 carat size in the right reference frame when you consider your diamond choices - there are for sure other diamonds in the same size range which may provide more in terms of their price and properties.
