Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.
Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

Although this VS2 clarity diamond is pretty much guaranteed to be "eye-clean", if you're aiming to reduce expenditure, try checking out SI clarity diamonds. Try to find a diamond that appears eye-clean in a photo or when seen in the flesh. While not quite as perfect a cut as Hearts & Arrows, the Ideal cut of this particular diamond means it is significantly cheaper, because you're not paying a premium for a "perfectly" cut diamond. Throwing $42770 towards a stone nets one a diamond well above the cut, such as this diamond. Just be sure that you and your partner are happy spending the money.
