Marquise Diamond Ring

When people first see a marquise diamond ring, it can be a little confusing. On first sight, it may look quite similar to an oval shaped diamond ring. It’s a little different however – it has pointed ends. It’s a little more challenging to cut because of these fragile, pointed ends. The ratio of length to width is typically about 2:1 – so it’s elongated but not really stretched out.

Terminology can also be a bit of a problem when shopping for a marquise diamond ring – it can also be called a Navette cut diamond. They can even be called boat-shaped diamonds! Sounds like a little crude description for something as beautiful as a diamond.

It’s a good option if you’re looking for a diamond cut that is a little different to the normal round or princess cut.

Budget wise, marquise diamonds are good because they can have good visual size appearance. Most of the stone’s mass is in its table region, which is the part you see. They’re also often paired with side diamonds or diamond banding or channelling in the ring.

One thing to be a little cautious of – marquise stones can vary quite a lot in their proportions. They can be ‘fat’ (smaller than 2-to-1 length-to-width ratios) or ‘skinny’ (larger than 2-to-1 length-to-width ratios).

Some cuts of marquise have the bow tie effect – when the cut doesn’t follow the natural division of the stone, light can escape from the stone without being reflected internally, which takes away from the sparkle attractiveness of the diamond. For some people this is a big issue, for others its actually an attraction. It’s perhaps more important to eyeball a marquise diamond in person before buying it, which may make this more of a “buy in stores” diamond.
