Quick and Easy Buying Guide

Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.

Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).

Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.

Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

For $32470, you should be getting a nice stone; ensure that you are harsh in your judgement as you look at this diamond. If you're checking out this diamond and thinking to yourself that you want to improve another property of the diamond which don't affect size, think about downgrading the 2.12 carat weight of this diamond. Do not neglect properties beside the four Cs, for example girdle thickness - it can be important for reasons outlined in my girdle thickness article. To the naked eye, this F color diamond by itself appears completely white and pure - there is no way to detect any color in the diamond utilizing just the human eye without nearby diamonds, or to differentiate it from others within the colorless range. Although not quite as perfect a cut as Hearts & Arrows, the Ideal cut of this particular diamond results in it being significantly cheaper, because you're not forking out money for a "perfectly" cut diamond.

VS is an abbreviation for Very Slightly Included - this VS1 clarity diamond contains some minor inclusions which may or may not be easy to see at 10x magnification, but rarely visible using just the naked eye - although it can occur on the odd occasion.
