Quick and Easy Buying Guide

Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.

Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).

Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.

Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

Don't try and assess diamond color from a photo - there's no need, as it's an F color - but do examine the photo to check whether its SI1 clarity grading is due to any unacceptably visible defects and inclusions.

The visual appearance of this diamond will be good due to its Premium cut, although inferior to the more expensive higher cut grades. SI is short for for Slightly Included; that means this SI1 stone has inclusions which are certainly visible at 10 x magnification and possibly to the naked eye, but which offer the potential for bargains if they are not. The size of this diamond is 0.72 carats - but make sure you look for the other diamonds for sale with that same 0.72 weight that might have a more desirable combination of properties and price. The girdle of this diamond ("Medium to thick") will have an effect on the diamond; don't ignore it completely. This diamond's $2320 cost is a major investment for many people, but the tradeoff is a nicer and bigger stone compared to if you were to only spend a few hundred bucks.

To the unassisted human eye, this F color diamond standing alone appears completely white and pure - there isn't a method to detect traces of color in the diamond utilizing only the human eye without nearby diamonds, or to differentiate it from others within the colorless range.
