Quick and Easy Buying Guide
Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.
Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).
Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.
Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.
Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

The H color of this diamond offers great value, as it isn't one of the expensive premium color grades D-F. If you are checking out this diamond and thinking to yourself that you want to improve other characteristics of the diamond which don't affect size, you may wish to reduce the 2.17 carat size for this diamond to achieve that end.
SI stands for Slightly Included; that means that this SI1 stone has inclusions which are definitely visible at 10 x magnification and possibly to the naked eye, but which offer the opportunity for significant price discounts if they are not.
This diamond has a girdle described as "Thin", which can have a role in the shine and apparently width of the diamond, as explained in my diamond girdle page. Although not quite as perfect a cut as Hearts & Arrows, the Ideal cut of this particular diamond results in it being significantly cheaper, because you're not forking out money for a "perfectly" cut diamond. Weighing up the $19280 price for this diamond, put in some thought into whether you need all the properties to be as good as they are.
