Quick and Easy Buying Guide

Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.

Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).

Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.

Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

Girdle thickness (for this diamond the girdle is "Thin to medium, faceted") can have an significant role in the apparent size of the diamond, which is detailed in my girdle thickness article. Most consumers won't notice the color in this G color diamond, except if the stone is compared side by side with a higher color grade diamond (something to think about if you're going for a 3 stone ring). While not quite as perfect a cut as Hearts & Arrows, the Ideal cut of this diamond results in it being significantly cheaper, because you're not paying a premium for a "perfectly" cut diamond.

For $7900, if you've done your shopping properly you should have a nice stone; ensure that you are plenty critical when you're looking at this stone. Through decreasing the size of this stone (1.05 carats), you may be able to save a substantial amount of money that will help out with other expenses. VS is an abbreviation for Very Slightly Included - this VS1 clarity diamond contains some smaller inclusions that may or may not be visible under 10x magnification, but rarely visible with the naked eye - although it can happen occasionally.
