Quick and Easy Buying Guide
Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.
Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).
Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.
Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.
Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

This diamond's girdle is "Thin to medium", which can have a role in the size and sparkle of the diamond, as explained in my diamond girdle page. Although this VS2 clarity diamond will almost certaintly be "eye-clean", if you are looking to reduce expenditure, try checking out SI clarity diamonds. Try to find a diamond that is eye-clean in a photo or when seen in the flesh. Most consumers won't notice the color in this G color diamond, unless the stone is held up against a diamond with say a D color rating (for multistone rings this is important). Although not quite as perfect a cut as Hearts & Arrows, the Ideal cut of this diamond results in it being significantly cheaper, because you're not forking out money for a "perfectly" cut diamond. This diamond's pricetag of $420 means it is firmly a member of the cheapest group of diamonds that might be used in an engagement ring setting.
Put this 0.27 carat weight in perspective when you weigh up your buying options - there are going to be other stones in the same size range which might offer more in terms of their cost and properties.
