Quick and Easy Buying Guide

Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.

Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).

Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.

Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

Tonight's Diamond - 0.46 Carat F Color VS2 Clarity Ideal Cut Round Cut Diamond

An F color diamond such as this F colored stone will present as pure white, that is except if you hold it up against a diamond of D color and in this situation even then it will be hard to tell for most amateurs.

Usually VS2 clarity diamonds are the best value "safe" clarity grading in terms of buying online without a photo - although a lower clarity grading is possible you need to see a high quality photo of the diamond to assess the defects for yourself. F color diamonds are pretty much colorless, meaning they are included in the pure white diamond range.

Don't ignore properties beside the four Cs, for example girdle thickness - it can be important due to reasons discussed in my girdle thickness article. Many different diamond sellers will provide an Ideal cut diamond cut grading, and these diamonds are usually (as is the situation here) perfect in terms of proportions and the general shape. This diamond's pricetag of $1180 puts it firmly a member of the least expensive group of stones that might be used in an engagement ring setting. If you eyeball this 0.46 carat stone and think to yourself, "that stone is too small", think about whether you can compromise by reducing another property such as color or cut so you can get for a larger diamond.
