A diamond that is sized at 2.06 carats is usually roughly 8.33 mm in the width dimension.

What many people don't realise is that a 8.33 mm wide diamond can be a range of weights, not just exactly 5 carats, because the diamond can vary in depth. A way of using numbers to help you compare diamonds is to calculate the cost per carat of diamond.

Don't be fooled into considering only the carat size, because other factors such as the size of the diamonds girdle can significantly impact on the apparent size of the diamond, which is more important than the carat weight (apart from for bragging rights). Is a handy hint - as well as searching for 2.06 diamonds, try starting your search by examining another property of the diamond, for instance the name of an online jewellery store you would be happy to buy a diamond from.

If you're considering a number of gemstones, not just diamonds, bear in mind that different types of stone have different densities, so a one carat diamond may appear quite different in size to a one carat emerald. It's interesting to note that while the small carat diamond (by small i mean one or two carats) may have only been discovered relatively recently, many of the spectacular large diamonds were found many hundreds of years ago, such as the regent diamond of france which was used by two of the king louis's, with a mighty size of 140 carats.
