Buying guide · Final check

One last check before you pay.

Take a few minutes to check the exact diamond, the finished ring, the returns and the delivery details.

A beautiful ring can still be a poor purchase if the details are unclear. Save the important documents, ask questions in writing and do not let a countdown or discount rush you.

Your final checklist

  1. Check the total cost. The advertised price may leave things out. Add the setting, tax or duties, delivery, resizing and insurance.
  2. Remember why you chose it. Make sure the ring still suits the look, origin, comfort and budget you wanted at the start.
  3. Confirm the exact diamond. Match the report number, carat, shape and measurements to the seller’s listing and invoice.
  4. Check the report online. Use the grading laboratory’s own website. Remember that a grading report is not a valuation or a promise about resale value.
  5. Look beyond the headline grades. Review clear photos or video, the diamond’s proportions and anything that may affect strength or appearance.
  6. Make sure the origin is clear. The report and invoice should plainly say whether the stone is natural, lab-grown, treated or a diamond lookalike.
  7. Check the ring details. Confirm the metal, ring size, band width, setting style, side stones and whether it will sit well with a wedding band.
  8. Read the return policy. Note the deadline, exclusions for resized or custom rings, return shipping costs and how you will be refunded. Save a copy.
  9. Understand the warranty. Ask what maintenance is required, what is excluded and who pays for shipping or repairs.
  10. Plan the delivery. Check insurance, signature requirements, discreet packaging, timing and what happens if the parcel is lost or delayed.
  11. Leave time to inspect it. Make sure the return window gives you enough time to check the ring, fit and paperwork after it arrives.
  12. Keep everything together. Save the invoice, grading report, policies, emails, photos and payment record.
  13. Step away if anything feels rushed. A countdown or expiring discount is not a reason to accept missing information.

Questions to ask in writing

  • Is the stone natural, lab-grown, treated or a diamond lookalike?
  • Can I check the grading report online?
  • Are these photos and this invoice for the exact diamond I will receive?
  • Will resizing or custom work affect my right to return it?
  • Who pays if delivery or return shipping goes wrong?
  • What cleaning or inspections are needed to keep the warranty?
  • What happens if the ring does not match the description?

GIA’s consumer guidance recommends obtaining a grading report, verifying report information and protecting the purchase. See the GIA diamond buyer’s guide for the current version of its guidance.
