Look at the ring from the side before you fall for the top view.

The side profile reveals how high the stone sits, what holds it in place and whether another band can sit beside it.

The parts worth naming. Knowing head, shoulders and shank makes it easier to ask useful questions about height, resizing and wedding-band fit.

Three parts change most buying conversations

Head
The structure holding the centre stone. Its height, prongs, bezel and basket affect security, cleaning and wedding-band fit.
Shoulders
The transition from the band to the head. They may rise into a cathedral, carry small stones or stay plain.
Shank
The band around the finger. Its width, thickness, profile and decoration affect comfort and resizing.

High and low are trade-offs, not quality grades

A high setting can create space for a straight wedding band and make the centre stone more prominent. It also gives the ring more height to catch on clothing or take a knock. A low setting can feel calmer and more protected, but the basket may prevent another straight band sitting flush.

Higher profileMore room beneath the stone, but more height to catch or knock.
Lower profileSits closer to the finger, but a straight wedding band may not fit underneath.
Straight band sits flushThe head leaves enough room for the two rings to meet.
Gap or shaped bandA low basket can push a straight band away from the engagement ring.

Four prongs or six?

Four prongs show more of a round diamond. Six add redundancy and can make the outline look rounder. Count alone does not prove security. Prong thickness, placement, workmanship and regular inspection matter too.

Ask these questions while the ring is in front of you

  • What physically holds the centre stone?
  • Can you show me the basket and prongs from the side?
  • Will a straight wedding band sit flush?
  • Which areas are most likely to catch or wear?
  • How often should the setting be checked?
  • Can the shank be resized without disturbing the design?
